Exhibited: Milan, Galleria Pesaro, mostra individuale dei tre Ciardi, March 1923, no. 21 (with the title “Riposo della sera”). Catalogued and illustrated in: A. Parronchi, Beppe Ciardi: catalogo generale delle opere, Allemandi, Turin 2019, p. 65 no. 35 and p. 268 no. 962. The son of Guglielmo Ciardi and brother of Emma Ciardi, Beppe Ciardi mainly painted scenes of everyday life, landscapes and views of the lagoon in Venice and its surroundings. The peacefulness and stillness of this painting, along with its bright, warm colours, are in the clear Venetian tradition. As with this painting, Ciardi’s primary focus was to capture the light and atmosphere of the lagoon. Indeed, the artist captures the luminous effects of the sunset on the water. In the foreground, fishermen are depicted resting at the end of the day.
