Lot description
This genre painting depicts a group of men in an interior setting, possibly a prison or a similar institutional space. The central figure, dressed in a white waistcoat, stands prominently in the foreground, illuminated by a strong light source from the right. Other figures are shown in various states of repose or distress in the dark, moody interior. The work's dramatic use of light and shadow is characteristic of 19th-century European painting. Oil on canvas, 42.5 x 52.5 cm
