Lot description

Mars 2, Paris, 1991 (Chambre Close) Bettina RHEIMS Created in Paris in 1991, this photograph belongs to Bettina Rheims’s seminal Chambre Close series, produced between 1990 and 1992. Working in modest Parisian hotels, Rheims photographed her models in intimate, often kitsch interiors, using color as a deliberate departure from her earlier black-and-white work. In Mars II, the model sits on a red empire sofa, wearing only a hat in the same hue, merging body and décor into a single visual field. The image exemplifies Rheims’s exploration of femininity, sexuality, and self-awareness, presenting the body as both vulnerable and assertive. Raw yet carefully staged, the photograph captures the series’ distinctive balance between realism, provocation, and psychological intensity.
