Lot description

A signed mixed-media vertical artwork by Inupiaq artist George Ahgupuk (1911-2001), drawn directly on prepared animal hide, congruent with Ahgupuk's well-known style. George Aden Ahgupuk, nicknamed Twok, was an Inupiaq artist known for his paintings and drawings of everyday Inupiaq life, often crafted on unique surfaces, including bleached walrus skin and animal hide. This artwork depicts a small portion of the Alaskan food chain: a polar bear feasting on its seal catch, with seagulls waiting to pick off the remnants. There is an orange glow of the sunset in the background, with some light coloring in the sky. Artwork is signed midway down on the right side, blending well with the shading of the icy tundra. It has a unique woven border; it is shrink-wrapped on board, measuring approximately 13.25" x 9.25".
