Lot description
Three unusual and scarce original oil paintings on canvas by Inupiaq artist Robert Mayokok (1903-1983). Mayokok's drawings and paintings are a glimpse into the Alaskan Native lifestyle, depicting hunting and fishing scenes, crafted in mixed media including ink, ink-washes, watercolor, and more, sometimes using surfaces such as animal skins and hides. Artworks depict various hunting scenes, including a man with his dog taking on a polar bear that has a fresh seal catch at its feet, a man in a kayak, harpoon raised, ready to throw at a walrus that is partially emerged out of the water, and a man with his dog having caught a seal and trailing it back home. All three depict icebergs or floe landscapes and pastel sunrises and sunsets. They are signed in the lower right; the painted canvases are inserted in wooden frames, each measuring approximately 11" x 14" overall with a sight view of 9" x 12".
