Lot description

A signed mixed-media painting by Inupiaq artist George Ahgupuk (1911-2001), drawn directly on prepared caribou skin, congruent with Ahgupuk's well-known style. George Aden Ahgupuk, nicknamed Twok, was an Inupiaq artist known for his paintings and drawings of everyday Inupiaq life, often crafted on unique surfaces, including bleached walrus skin and animal hide. This artwork depicts a small herd of caribou running across a rural landscape, an environment that embodies the Alaskan wilderness, with a bright blue sky across the upper half of the piece; a hunter with his bow raised directly at a lagging caribou in the background. Artwork is signed in the lower right corner; it is matted and framed, measuring approximately 7.75" x 13.75" overall.
