Lot description

This mid-20th-century cast resin bust, titled Heroic Head, is by the American artist Edward Melcarth. The sculpture depicts a male figure with a dramatic, anguished expression and highly stylized, flowing hair, reflecting a Romantic or Neoclassical influence. The piece is finished with a deep black patina and prominent green verdigris-style oxidation within the textured recesses of the hair to simulate the appearance of aged bronze. The work is signed and dated on the reverse of the neck Melcarth 60, though the first three letters are currently obscured by a chip. It also features a stylized JC monogram alongside a copyright symbol. The bust is mounted via a single metal rod onto a square, light brown porous stone or cast-cement plinth. Dimensions: 7.00"L x 7.50"W x 13.25"H Weight: 13.00 lb 1.00 oz
