Lot description

CHRYSSA (GREEK-AMERICAN 1933-2013) Project Tegel Airport, Berlin, 1974-75 gouache, charcoal and mixed media on paper 72 x 35 cm (28 3/8 x 13 3/4 in.) framed dimensions: 76 x 39 cm (30 x 15 3/8 in.) signed and dated bottom, titled on top LOT NOTES Executed during Chryssa's residency in Berlin in the mid-1970s, this work is a sophisticated study of light, depth, and industrial form. It captures the artist's fascination with the "zig-zag" and "W" shapes that characterized her neon sculptures of the era. The inscription "Project Tegel Airport" suggests this was a conceptual drawing for a site-specific commission or proposal for the then-newly constructed Berlin Tegel Airport, a landmark of Brutalist and functionalist architecture. Like her famous Gates to Times Square, this work explores the translation of urban and architectural symbols into rhythmic, abstract patterns. Keywords: Minimalism, Light Art, Luminist Sculpture, Conceptual art, Berlin Tegel Airport, 1970s Berlin, Greek-American diaspora N.B. Condition reports are available upon request. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
