Lot description
A finely executed ink drawing depicting women at a loom and spinning wheel within a rocky cave interior, recalling mythological themes of weaving fate and destiny. The subject evokes the classical tradition of the Fates, female figures who spin and measure the thread of life. With its vivid line work, and allegorical subject matter, the sheet is characteristic of the refined manner associated with Gerard de Lairesse. I added an image of a drawing by Gerard de Lairesse now in the MET (Inv. 1975.1.784 ) with exactly the same style of hatching and similar distribution of the figures over the sheet. The approximate dating ca. 1667-88 given by the MET for their drawing also corresponds to the French lily watermarked laid paper of our drawing. A nice drawing very likely by Gerard de Lairesse or a circle.
