Lot description

Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997). "Danz" house paint on plywood, n.d. Signed at lower left and titled down left margin. Black Joe Jackson's "Danz," a spirited expression rendered in house paint upon a humble plywood canvas, bursts forth with the unbridled joy of movement. Two figures, boldly silhouetted against a textured dreamscape, are enraptured in dance. A woman, cloaked in a flowing dress of soft blue, seems to twirl with arms flung wide, while a man, vibrant in a striking yellow top and dark trousers, appears caught in a lively step, his arms raised in joyous abandon. The background, a rich tapestry of swirling hues - earthy browns mingling with bursts of yellow, pink, and muted greens - creates a dynamic energy that mirrors the figures' spirited interaction. This raw and expressive work, painted with a directness characteristic of a self-taught hand, perhaps echoes the rhythms and communal celebrations of Jackson's Southern upbringing, transforming simple materials into a vibrant ode to the pure, uninhibited pleasure of dance. Size: 18.75" W x 23.5" H (47.6 cm x 59.7 cm) About the Artist: Black Joe Jackson was a self-taught African-American artist born to a sharecropper family near Atlanta, Georgia in 1920. Jackson created paintings on wooden boards and used easily available materials such as house paint an scrap wood. He was born with dyslexia, and the writings on his paintings demonstrate this. He is oftentimes described as a folk artist or an outsider artist due to his playful, naive style. Jackson's themes reflect memories from his childhood in the South.
