Edward Mitchell Bannister (American, 1828-1901) Landscape on the Shore Oil on canvas Unsigned Provenance: Grand Central Art Galleries, circa 1990 Private Collection, New York Shannon's Auction, September 17, 2020, Lot 40 Private Collection, Washington, DC Note: We would like to thank Anne Avery for her kind assistance cataloguing this work. According to Ms. Avery, despite the lack of signature, "this oil is immediately and strikingly identifiable as a Bannister. The subject matter incorporates multiple tropes used consistently throughout his career: the distant sail boats, the little half-hidden house, the mass of trees, the flash of sea, the approaching storm. The broad loose brushwork is typical of his later en plein air oil sketches and there are dozens of comparable extant examples. See, for example, Untitled [Rhode Island Landscape] from 1898...Even without a signature, I would be happy to give a positive attribution to this piece- this represents a really lovely example of his outside summer work from the late 1880s/early 1890s." This work will be listed in the supplemental section of the Bannister catalogue raisonné. Edward Mitchell Bannister was the only New England artist to receive a bronze medal at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia for his painting Under the Oaks, (the first World's Fair to be held in the United States). The award marked a historic milestone, making Bannister the first African-American artist to receive a national prize for his work and brought significant attention to Bannister's achievements as a landscape painter.
