Lot description
Brion Gysin, British/Canadian 1916-1986 - Two works on paper including 'Untitled'; ink and watercolour on paper, signed with initials lower right 'BG', 64.2 x 50 cm: together with another work on paper by the same artist of the same medium, 'Untitled, 1959', 39.8 x 34.2 cm (2) (unframed) (ARR) Note: the work is accompanied by two letters from composer Paul Bowles (1910-1999) dated to 1984 and 1987, with whom the artist travelled to Tangier in 1950. Gysin developed numerous experimental techniques in work, which ranged between painting, performance and poetry, alongside his friend William S. Burroughs. The present works utilise delicate and repetitive markings that evoke an abstract language, similar to the work of Mark Tobey and Henri Michaux.
