Two years later, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and was a student of Carl Bantzer. Together with the Brücke artist Otto Mueller, he shared a studio apartment in Munich (1898-99). A close friendship connected the two men, as Kother married Mueller's sister. Through Otto Mueller, he met other artists of the "Brücke" and their circle and exhibited with them. Kother lived in Berlin from 1914 and was represented at exhibitions of the "Sturm" gallery and the "Novembergruppe". Works were also exhibited in 1915 at the Emil Richter Gallery.
