Lot description

MATHIAS KAUAGE (Papuan 1944-2003), 'Black Fish', 1968, screenprint on paper, ed. 8/50, sheet 53 x 83 cm. Reference: 'Decolonising the Mind' by Ulli Beier, Pandanus Books, Canberra, 2005, pg. 41, which quotes from a Times of India review: 'Mathias is a potentially abstract artist. His 'Masks' has the lucidity of this genre, and his 'Black Fish' with its purity of image embellished by an unsophisticated slice of the alphabet could easily have graced a Picasso plate'. Provenance: estate of the late Ian Dunlop OAM. Probably purchased from Ulli and Georgina Beier circa 1969 on a visit to PNG by Ian Dunlop.
