Lot description

Jean-Baptiste Van Loo (French, 1684-1745) Head and Shoulder Portrait of William Guthrie, polymath writer of the Scottish Enlightenment, dressed in red cap and jacket with a white stock, and holding a quill pen and a copy of his newly published translation of Cicero's De Oratore. The portrait is datable to 1742, the year in which Guthrie's De Oratore was published, and also the year in which Van Loo, his health beginning to decline, moved back to Paris. At this age, Guthrie was only about 34, and this was the first major work he had published. The iconographical schema is a simple one: the proud young translator holds his writer's quill and his new magnum opus is pushed to the forefront of the composition, its red label clearly inscribed. Oil on lined canvas In a fine Georgian carved and gilt wood frame Provenance: Collection of the late D. W. Fuller Esq. Dimensions: (Frame) 39 in. (H) x 34 in. (W) (Canvas) 30 in. (H) x 25 in. (W)
