Lot description

oil and sand on canvas, 39 x 46 cm, signed and dated lower middle: Emil Filla 49. Provenance: Sotheby’s New York Impressionist and Modern Art auction, Lot. 61, March 13, 2013; significant private collection Prague. Consulted with Dr Frantisek Krejci Jr. (great-nephew and copyright holder of the painter). Further consulted with Dr Irena Zantovska Murray HonFRIBA, Professor Jaromir Zemina, Dr Jiri Machalicky and Vladimir Lekes. Authenticity certificate enclosed. The vividly executed, optimistic work is impressive for its vibrant palette, related to the artist’s regained ability to paint. Filla confidently presents familiar motifs and the popular subject of the still life, but reveals it to the viewer in a new, highly sensuous light that underscores its creator’s newly regained freedom to breathe, eat and not have to worry about hunger.
