Ludovic-Rodo (Ludovic-Rodolphe) Pissarro 7Eme Bal de l'AAAA / A Magic City vintage poster 1929 sight: 46.375 h x 30.375 w in (118 x 77 cm) Though his baby brother Emile's design for the following year's Artist's Ball appears more frequently in poster circles (see PAI-XXXVII , 472), Ludovic-Rodo's promotion for the 1929 gala being held at Paris' Magic City-titled "A Night at the North Pole"-is pure arctic-conditions-in-springtime fun. And seriously, who can resist an ice skating polar bear? Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro was French Impressionist Camille Pissarro's fourth son; he was familiarly known as Rodo and generally signed his works "Ludovic-Rodo." Rodo's artistic production encompassed a wide range of media, including oil painting, tempera, watercolor, gouache, wood engraving, drawing and lithography. He also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Independents over a forty year period. Despite his own considerable achievements as an artist, Rodo is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to art history: for twenty years he researched and compiled a catalogue of his father's paintings-a project that is still considered to be the definitive reference book on Camille's work.
