Robert Wallace Martin for Martin Brothers, a novelty stoneware sculptural fish jug, 1887, modelled as a coiled sea creature, mouth open, the arched fin forming the handle, incised marks 3-1887, RW Martin + Bros, London + Southall, 22cm high Note: similar examples from this aquatic series of coiled fish and snail jugs, all produced in 1887, appear in Haslam, M, 1978, Martin Brothers, p.62, Fig. IX; one example similar to this jug is in the collection of the William Morris Gallery, London, while another was sold at Skinner, New York, 24th October 2009
