Lot description

Scott Leighton (1847-1898) American painter highly regarded for his equestrian scenes. Born in Auburn, Maine, he was taught how to paint by Harrison Bird Brown in Portland. Unable to make a living as an artist in Maine, he eventually moved to Boston, where his abilities were quickly realized. It wasn't long before major lithographic firms picked up his work, the most important of which was Currier & Ives. From record breaking trotting horses, such as Maud S., to domestic and comedic equestrian scenes, Leighton's love for horses translated into artistic mastery. Offered here is an UNSIGNED watercolor removed from one of his sketchbooks. 4 x 6-3/4 in. VG.
