Lot description
Herbert Davis Richter, British 1874-1955- An interior corridor with a vase of anemones; oil on canvas, signed 'H DAVIS RICHTER' (lower right), 92 x 70 cm. Provenance: with The Pyms Gallery, London [C904]. Note: Richter studied furniture design at the Bath School of Art, going on to establish the company 'Bath Cabinet Makers' with his brother Charles. In 1906, he enrolled at the Lambeth School of Art, and then at the London School of Art, where he studied under Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) and John Macallan Swan (1846-1910). Richter is best-known for his peaceful interior and genre scenes, which exhibit the influence of 17th-century Dutch painter Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684), as well as artists of the Danish Golden Age like Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916), particularly in the exploration of viewpoints through doors and windows, and the reflections of mirrors. These interests are evident in a number of Richter's paintings, including in his oils which sold at Christie's, London, on 12 March 2015, lot 12 (£4,000), and at Sotheby's, London, on 24 June 1985, lot 322 (£4,620).
