Lot description

Willem de Zwart, Dutch 1862-1931- A still life of red and white rhododendrons; oil on panel, signed 'W. Zwart' (upper right), 34.5 x 27.5 cm. Provenance: A Distinguished Collection, with Kunsthandel Huisman, The Hague. Glerum, The Hague, 16 October 1989, lot 191. Anon. sale, Venduehuis Den Haag, Gravenhage, 18 May 2022, lot 101 (€1,000 hammer). Private Collection, UK. Note: De Zwart is associated with the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionism movement, and his work is often compared with that of his contemporary George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923). The loose brushstrokes and bright colours of the present work are typical of de Zwart's approach, and recall, for example, his floral still life which sold at Venduehuis Den Haag on 18 November 2021, lot 163 (€4,000 hammer).
