Lot description

Maurice Lévis, French 1860-1940- View of a village on the Marne; oil on canvas, signed 'Maurice Lévis' (lower left), faintly inscribed 'Un village sur la Marne / ... [?]' to the lower stretcher bar, 28 x 46.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lévis studied under Henri Harpignies (1819-1916), Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911), and Pierre Billet (1837-1922), with his light, airy landscapes exhibiting a particularly strong debt to Harpignies' approach. The present river landscape, with the outlines of a tower silhouetted against a warm sky, is typical of Lévis's oeuvre, recalling, for example, his landscape in the collection of Sheffield Museums [VIS.1338].
