Lot description

George Spencer Watson, RA RP ROI, British 1869-1934- View along the waterfront of Veere, with the Campveerse Tower and the Grote Kerk; oil on canvas, inscribed 'VEERE' verso, bears label for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters inscribed 'Vere[sic.] Holland / G. Spencer Watson / 20 Holland Park Rd / W.14' attached to the reverse of the frame, 86.5 x 91.5 cm. Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist by the grandfather of the present owner. Exhibited: London, 'The Royal Institute of Oil Painters', London. Note: Spencer Watson studied at the Royal Academy Schools, winning silver medals in 1889 and 1891, and was awarded the Landseer Scholarship in 1892. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1891, and enjoyed considerable success as a portraitist over the course of his career. Indeed, Spencer Watson was a prolific painter of portraits, making the present landscape a relatively unusual subject for the artist. Nevertheless, the painting exhibits techniques which are characteristic of the artist's output, particularly the light, bright palette which is also evident, for example, in his view of 'The cottage garden' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 March 2005, lot 276 (£11,400) and 'Mary in the gardens' which sold at Christie's, London, on 16 June 2010, lot 118 (£15,000). The Grote Kerk in Veere, Zeeland, is a 14th-century Gothic church, with construction of the current structure starting around 1470 under architect Anthonis I Keldermans. It has served various roles, including a Protestant church, a hospital during the 1809 English invasion, and a sheep stable. The church is a defining monument in the historic town of Veere, reflecting its wealth from medieval trade with Scotland. The Campveerse Toren is a historic 15th-century defensive tower that once served as part of the city's harbour fortifications. It is now renowned as one of the oldest inns in the country, operating as a boutique hotel and restaurant overlooking the Veerse Meer.
