Lot description

James Kay, RSA RSW, Scottish 1858-1942- A flower market in a city street; oil on canvas, signed 'James Kay RSW' (lower left), 25.4 x 35.6 cm. (unframed). Provenance: The Selma Orentreich Tanner Estate, New York. Private Collection, UK. Note: Kay was active in Glasgow throughout the late 19th century, and is thus often associated with the Glasgow Boys, who were working at the same time. Like artists James Paterson (1854-1932) and William York MacGregor (1855-1923), Kay's scenes are heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement. The present work is a particularly charming example of his painted oeuvre.
