Lot description
Hans Dahl, Norwegian 1849-1937- View of the Hardanger Fjord, with a girl tending goats; oil on canvas, signed 'Hans-Dahl' (lower left), 72.2 x 110.6 cm. Provenance: with the Polak Gallery, London. Note: Dahl received his initial artistic training whilst in the army, and subsequently served as an apprentice under Johan Fredrik Eckersberg (1822-1870) and Knud Bergslien (1827-1908). He also travelled to Karlsruhe, where he studied under Hans Gude (1825-1903), and to Düsseldorf, where he was taught by Eduard von Gebhardt (1838-1925) and Wilhelm Sohn (1829-1899). The present painting is a characteristic example of Dahl's romantic landscapes, typically featuring smiling figures wearing traditional regional dress in a sweeping Scandinavian landscape. Indeed, similar compositions include the artist's paintings which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 13 June 2006, lot 180 (£14,400), and at Christie's, London, on 4 December 2002, lot 92 (£21,510).
