Lot description

Leonardo Roda, Italian 1868-1933- View of the Matterhorn; oil on canvas, triptych, signed 'L. RODA' (lower right), the central canvas 59.4 x 59.2 cm., the left and right canvases 44.8 x 99.5 cm., overall (unframed dimensions) 259 x 59.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: This view is taken from the south side of the Matterhorn. Roda was a prolific painter of sweeping mountain views, of which the present work is a particularly striking example. He returned to the subject of the Matterhorn, also known as 'El Cervino', on a number of occasions, including in his paintings which sold at Finarte, Milan, on 13 May 2025, lot 166 (€1,935), and at Meeting Art in Vercelli on 21 April 2024, lot 256 (€5,200 hammer). Another version of this distinctive view by Roda can be found in the Towneley Hall Art Gallery, Lancashire [BURGM:paoil81].
