Ernest Borough Johnson, British 1866-1949- From the Sion Gate, Jerusalem; pencil, pen, black ink, and watercolour on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'Borough Johnson / From the Zion Gate. Jerusalem. 1925' (lower right), 25.3 x 33.5 cm. (mounted / unframed). Provenance: with Lester Gallery, no.3053. Private Collection, UK. Note: Ernest Borough Johnson studied at the Slade under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), and at the Herkomer School in Bushey. He went on to become Professor of Fine Arts at Bedford College, and exhibited widely in London and abroad, including at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. He was married to fellow artist Esther George (fl.1896-1940).
