Lot description
John Dobbin, British 1815-1888- A canal scene in Utrecht, with a view of the Dom Tower; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'J Dobbin / 1860' (lower left), inscribed 'UTRECHT.' (to the boat, lower centre), 54.3 x 41.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Dobbin was a prolific watercolourist, who was celebrated for his views of the various cities and landscapes which he encountered over the course of his extensive European travels, as well as his many depictions of his native Darlington. The present work depicts the distinctive Dom Tower in Utrecht, built between 1321 and 1382, and now known as the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, although it is technically free-standing, as the adjoining cathedral was never finished and collapsed in 1674.
