Lot description

Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, French 1636-1699- Still life with a bouquet of flowers in a vase, from 'Le Livre de toutes sortes de fleurs d'après nature'; engraving on laid paper, signed 'J. Baptiste Sculp.' (within the plate, lower left), 48.5 x 37 cm. Provenance: The Collection of Professor David Davies (1937-2022), art historian; Thence by descent. Private Collection, UK. Note: Monnoyer was a prominent and influential floral painter who was particularly well-known through his connection with the tapestry workshops at Gobelins and Beauvais, for whom he produced cartoons of fruit and flowers as designs for the tapestry-weavers. His engravings, particularly those created for 'Le Livre de toutes sortes de fleurs d'après nature', are noted for their botanical accuracy, and served as inspiration for decorative designers for decades to follow.
