Lot description

Carel Allard, Dutch 1648-1709- Exactissima Asiae Delineatio in Praecipuas Regiones; hand-coloured engraving, 51 x 59.5 cm. (mounted / unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Allard was part of a prominent family of map-makers and printsellers in 17th-century Amsterdam, which included Carel's father Hugo Allard (1627-1684), whose business Carel inherited. The present map is historically significant, reflecting the immense advances in European understanding of the geography of Asia over the course of the 17th century, with the configurations of Japan, China, the East Indies, and Indochina improving significantly since the early 1600s.
