Lot description
Anthony Devis, British 1729-1816- The Finding of the Baby Moses; pencil and watercolour on paper, 14 x 21 cm. Provenance: John Trevor, third Baron Trevor, thence by descent. Private Collection, UK. Note: Devis was a successful painter, best-known for his landscapes, particularly of the estates of wealthy landowners, often in the north of England. He was also a prolific draughtsman, with the present work a characteristic example of the artist's sketches, and very much recalls in handling, for example, his 'Sea-shore with a peasant woman and boy carrying bundles' at the Victoria & Albert Museum [E.338-1948]. John Trevor, third Baron Trevor, of St Anne's Hill, Surrey, and Trevalyn Hall, Denbighshire, was a patron of Devis, and is believed to be the subject of a portrait by Devis in the collection of the Yale Centre for British Art [B1993.22.2].
