Lot description
Giacomo Guardi, Italian 1764-1835- A pair of Venetian scenes: San Lazzaro degli Armeni; and Sant'Angelo della Polvere; each pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on laid paper, the first bears inscription 'S. Lazzaro de Armeni / Giacomo de Guardi' verso, the second bears inscription 'S. Angelo della / Polvere / Giamo de Guardi' verso, the second with crescent moon watermark, the first 9.9 x 16.9 cm., the second 9.4 x 16.5 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 12 December 1985, lot 281. Note: These Venetian scenes are characteristic works by Giacomo Guardi, executed in a distinctive style which was nevertheless heavily informed by the work of the artist's father, Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). Like his father, Giacomo specialised in Venetian 'vedute' and the present paintings are particularly charming examples of such views which the artist treated on multiple occasions. Indeed, the same view of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, in particular, was treated by Giacomo several times, including as part of pairs which sold at Sotheby's, Paris, on 13 October 2022, lot 702 (€7,560), and at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 12 May 2022, lot 340 (€9,600). We are grateful to Dario Succi for confirming the attribution of the present lot.
