Lot description
Gillis van Tilborgh, Flemish c.1625-c.1678- Two Tavern Scenes: A peasant embracing a maid; and A peasant family; oils on panel, the first signed with initials 'GT' (lower left), each 24.8 x 19.2 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, Amsterdam, 9 March 1991, lot 196. Anon. sale, Hampel, Munich, 18 September 2009, lot 406 (€3,400 hammer). Note: Van Tilborgh is believed to have trained with his father, Gillis van Tilborgh the Elder (1578-c.1623), before studying under David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). Indeed, Van Tilborgh's atmospheric tavern interiors exhibit the influence of Teniers, as well as contemporaries Adriaen Brouwer (c.1605-1638) and Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685). The present works recall similar scenes by van Tilborgh which sold at Hampel, Munich, on 27 March 2025, lot 359 (€6,480), and at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 10 December 2013, lot 83 (€3,750).
