Lot description

August Albo 1883-1963 Thamar Gevergeva. 1926. Condition A-: minor tears, losses, and creases at edges; creases along horizontal fold. Mounted on Japan. Albo was an Estonian artist who studied in Russia. He lived and worked in many of the world's capital cities, including Paris, Berlin and New York, where he spent the majority of his time. Albo was also a dancer, which helps explain why so much of his work featured portraits and images of ballerinas. Thamar Gevergeva was a talented Russian dancer who performed with Ballanchine in the mid 1920s and danced in the Ballets Russes' production of Prokofiev's Le Pas d'Acier in 1927. This poster was designed prior to that engagement and was likely used as a stock advertisement for her performances. It is extremely rare - a compelling composition infused with Futurist dynamism and Art Deco sleekness.
