Williamson described it as 'An exceedingly fine picture, worthy of all praise, and will rank by the side of the greatest oil paintings of that period. It is, so far as I know, the only great oil painting which Gardner ever produced; for his other important one, representing Mrs Gardner and the two children... is not equal in merit to the Miss Elizabeth Haward' (loc.cit.). When it was sold at auction in 1911 it sold for the record price of 2200 guineas.
