Lot description

Property from the Estate of Arthur B. Kouwenhoven Jr., Savannah, GA Description: Don Gray (NY, 1935), Portrait of His Wife, Pastel on Paper, 1963, signed and dated '63 upper right, matted and framed. Frame size: 18 1/ 4in. X 17 3/ 4 in. Don Gray credit's his early inspirations to the landscape of his childhood in rural northeast Oregon. He studied art at Eastern Oregon University, learning traditional techniques that resulted in meticulously rendered realist paintings. After graduation in 1970, Gray taught high school art for a year, before beginning a professional art career. He exhibited widely in the Pacific Northwest, developing a regional following for his landscapes and figures. In 1978 Gray formed a partnership, Bear Wallow Publishing, with writer Rick Steber and photographer Jerry Gildemeister. Their co-creations were coffee-table style illustrated books of western history. In the mid-1980's, Gray's realist style began to change as he experimented with a more spontaneous approach. His current work combines the traditional with a more contemporary expression. Measurements: Height: by sight 10 in. x Width: 9 3/4 in.
