VICENTE ARNÁS LOZANO (Madrid, 1949). "Character with a big cap", 2023. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Titled, signed and dated on the back. Measurements: 46 x 37,5 cm; 61 x 53 cm (frame). Vicente Arnás Lozano constructs a figure that oscillates between the historical and the oneiric, faithful to a pictorial poetics where the identity is fragmented and reinvented. The oil on panel reinforces the material density of the work with glazes and scratches that give psychological depth to the portrait. The character, presented in profile, wears a monumental cap that becomes almost a landscape. Organic forms, crustaceans and abstract volumes coexist in it, as if the head housed a symbolic ecosystem. This resource shifts the interest from the physical resemblance to the inner world, suggesting memory, thought and subconscious. The dark mask cancels the direct gaze and reinforces a sense of introspection and mystery. Color is one of the main protagonists: deep blues, murky greens and intense reds dialogue with an earthy palette and a dark background that envelops the figure in a theatrical atmosphere. The red, especially present in the cheek and in the rear element of the costume, introduces emotional tension and vitality, while the white of the curly collar provides a classical, almost baroque counterpoint. Vicente Arnás is a painter from Madrid who began his artistic career linked to the world of advertising. After several years of experience, in 1976, he had his first individual exhibition, which was held in the Macarrón room in Madrid. After the success of his first exhibition, he began an exhibition career that has taken him to places like New York, or different European countries. Participating in prestigious fairs such as Arco, or Europ Art, held in Geneva. He has also been awarded on numerous occasions, being medal of honor in the BMW painting award and receiving the prize of the Real maestranza of Seville, among others. Something that has earned him the recognition of both the public and the critics. His painting is characterized by the recreation of dreamlike worlds, placid, where it seems that time stands still. He creates worlds of realistic aesthetics, close to currents such as magical realism, or influences such as those of the painter Arcimboldo or Bosch. During a period of time he was part of the group "Nueve expresiones" with whom he exhibited in several collective exhibitions.
