Untitled signed and dated 1972 (lower left) oil on wood 5 1/2” x 7 1/2” (14 cm x 19 cm) Focusing on street scenes and urban landscapes, Sofronio Mendoza’s artworks highlight the densely packed environment of urban life, capturing the fleeting atmosphere and everyday life as colonial architecture began to decay. With his early works serving as a visual record of a vanishing colonial Manila, where he documented pre-war buildings that were lost during the war or had survived but were now deteriorating, these urban landscape pieces by Mendoza reflect the current decay, historical character, and heritage—the Spanish colonial bridges, canals and buildings had been replaced with densely packed streets made of barong-barong houses. Effectively captured Manila’s post-war urban landscape in the 1970s. (Mark John Castañeda)
