Lot description

Death March (Capas) unsigned oil on canvas 9” x 12” (23 cm x 30 cm) Beginning with his cloud studies, Dominador Castañeda’s paintings reflected the beautiful landscapes he observed in his childhood, after hours spent running and playing in the green pastures. His oeuvre offers a genuine portrayal of the Philippine countryside—the resplendent landscapes and bustling communities filled with different activities. Aside from his calm and scenic paintings, he also made a body of work featuring historical events, mostly looking back on the atrocities brought by the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, as seen in Death March (Capas). Castañeda’s colorism profoundly captures the viewer’s emotions. Most of the time, he uses cool tones, bathing his scenes in a cool afternoon air, inviting viewers to take a moment of respite and appreciate the bygone days. Other times, his works sport a warm palette. This deviation from his usual tones results in images that resemble old photographs, exuding nostalgia and enhancing the heartfelt warmth that emanates from the scene it portrays. However, these warm undertones also exude heat and rage brought by the nightmare chain of events during the Occupation and its aftermath. (Jessica Magno)
