Lot description
Untitled signed and dated 1927 (lower right) watercolor on paper 9” x 11” (23 cm x 28 cm) Best known for his work as both an architect and an artist, Juan Arellano showcases his artistic skill beyond architecture by creating magnificent works that reflect modernist sensibilities that predate the formal recognition of modernism in the Philippine art scene. From landscapes and buildings to portraits and other figures, Arellano often infuses his oeuvre with Filipino spirituality and local context, reflecting his usual blending of National identity into his designs. His featured pieces aim to reflect the stillness that draws observers to meditate on the images’ subject matter. From religious iconography that serves as a representation of grief, faith, and quiet strength—values that are deeply rooted in Filipino culture, or calming landscapes that provide viewers with a feeling of nostalgia and peace, Arellano combines his architectural and artistic approach—his legacy as both an architect and a painter underscores his massive influence on Filipino Visual culture and architecture.
