Lot description

Franz Alt (Austrian 1821-1941) Chateau Scene in gouache signed lower left 7 x 9" 13 x 16" as framed. Alt was an Austrian landscape and architectural painter, known for his detailed watercolors of European cityscapes and interiors, often featuring grand architecture and bustling street life. The son of painter Jakob Alt and younger brother of Rudolf von Alt, he trained at the Vienna Academy and became a renowned artist with works in the collections of international museums and royal courts. His style, similar to his brother's, emphasized form and detail, capturing picturesque views and scenes from his travels across Europe, Russia, and beyond. His work is included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cooper Hewitt Museum (Smithsonian), the Albertina Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest and other international collections
