Lot description

Joe Anna Arnett (American, 1950-2024). "Silver Demo with Tangerine" oil on board, n.d. Initialed at lower left; signed and titled on verso. In "Silver Demo with Tangerine," Joe Anna Arnett distills elegance and immediacy into a compact, luminous study. A brilliant orange fruit rests casually against the reflective surface of a silver teapot, its vivid color and jagged green stem offering a sharp contrast to the cool, dark tones behind it. Loose yet precise brushwork captures the quiet tension between formality and freshness - the glint of polished metal, the bloom of citrus skin, and the shifting ambient light that defines them both. Known for her technical mastery and her devotion to teaching others the classical traditions of still life painting, Arnett imbues this demonstration with the same painterly discipline she passed on to generations of artists. Size of painting: 9.5" W x 7.5" H (24.1 cm x 19 cm); of frame: 11.5" W x 9.5" H (29.2 cm x 24.1 cm) Her training as both artist and instructor is evident in the confident, economical strokes that shape the object, shadow, and subtle reflection - a visual lesson in balance, value, and texture. This intimate composition invites the viewer to linger - to see how silver bends light into shadow, how the tangerine bursts with hue, how a deceptively simple arrangement can become a study in both contrast and harmony. Arnett's hand is sure, her vision clear, her love for traditional still life deeply felt in every inch of the board.
