Monique CRAS (Brest 1910 - Paris 2007) Hoggar landscape Original oil on canvas 63.5 x 98.5 cm Signed and titled lower right Monique Cras Hoggar Daughter of composer Jean Cras, Monique Cras trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in the studios of Paul-Albert Laurens and Lucien Simon. Winner of several prizes (Prix Henner, Prix Taylor, Prix Gay-Lebrun), from the late 1920s she took part in the great Parisian salons. A traveler and Africanist painter, she spent time in North Africa and French West Africa, from which she brought back landscapes and scenes of life imbued with an attentive, sensitive eye. Her luminous, structured palette evokes the desert expanses of the Sahara and the reliefs of the Hoggar. Her work, rare and sought-after, illustrates a synthesis between academic rigor and a fascination for distant lands.
