Lot description

Vincent MANAGO (Toulon,1880 - Paris,1936) Street scene in Kairouan Oil on cardboard 38 x 56 cm Signed, located and dated lower left, illegible Mana ... Kairouan 19 ... An emblematic view of the Kairouan medina, probably inspired by the area around the Great Mosque, with its square minarets and bustling alleyways. Manago captures the bright light and life of the souks, recreating the Mediterranean and spiritual atmosphere of the holy Tunisian city. An Italian-born French painter who studied with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian, Manago worked mainly in Marseille, where he exhibited between 1900 and 1913. He also traveled to Algeria and Tunisia. His realistic style, tinged with romanticism, won him popular recognition. His paintings were widely distributed in the form of postcards and posters, contributing to his notoriety.
