He worked as a painter, architect and interior designer. His abstract paintings, studies and works on paper are among his best-known forms of expression. The early works of Jozef Mees (1898–1987) were influenced by the Flemish Expressionists, with monumental, structured figures and landscapes. A friend of Frits Van den Berghe, he owned several of his works. From the 1950s onwards, when he was already in his fifties, Mees turned to abstraction. The bark-like structure in his whimsical and fanciful compositions is reminiscent of American action painting.
