Lot description

ANDRE DUNOYER DE SEGONZAC (French, 1884-1974). Boxe - Combat de Sam Mac Vea contre Sam Langford, circa 1913, Etching is a "Gravure d' Artiste" (artist's engraving). Ink signed by the artist lower right hand corner. The etching depicts of the compelling rivalries in boxing history, involving two of the legendary "Black Heavyweights" (Sam Langford :The "Boston Bonecrusher") and Sam McVea: The "Oxnard Cyclone")who were often denied a shot at the official world title due to the "color line." However, the fight between Sam McVea and Sam Langford was not a single match, but a historic series of at least 15 bouts fought over many years, with some sources claiming up to 16. The etching may illustrate a match which occurred in March 1913 at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Australia. Unframed. Not mounted or laid down. - Image: 9.5 x 8.75 inches; Sheet: 13 x 10 inches
