Amadou SECK (Dakar, 1950) Untitled Oil on canvas 73 x 134 cm Signed lower center A. Seck Provenance: Collection J. Lassaque, acquired directly from the artist in the 1990s. "Born in Dakar in 1950, Amadou Seck was initially self-taught before being admitted as an auditor at the École des Arts de Dakar (1965-1970), where he studied under Pierre Lods. There, he developed a singular language nourished by African visual traditions, masks and symbolic systems, combined with a solid academic training. In the 1970s, his work asserted itself in a "poetics of the mask" inspired by the Baga, Dogon, Senufo and Marka repertoires. He experimented with raw materials (earth, charcoal, natural pigments), then moved towards a geometric, cubist style, also encouraged by Pierre Soulages. This decade was marked by intense international activity: Grand Palais (1974), solo exhibitions in Paris, Milan, Dakar, Bonn and New York. The 1980s and 1990s confirmed his reputation, with exhibitions at WORKS II (New York, 1985), the Vasarely Foundation (1990), the Lugano Fair (1994), the Salon d'Automne (1994) and the Musée de Saint-Maur (1997). His work, powerful and inventive, remains one of the singular voices of Senegalese modernity."
