Lot description
Ali BELLAGHA (Tunis, 1924 - 2006) Khaoula, 1996 Mixed media, carved wood, engraving, acrylic 37 x 28 cm on view Signed lower right. Close to the search for symbolic abstraction, Bellagha's painting is a blend of Western modernity and North African memory. An artist deeply rooted in Tunisian culture, Ali Bellagha has worked throughout his career to renew the link between learned art and popular traditions. In Khaoula, a 1995 work, he takes up his favorite female theme, a symbol of permanence and memory. The face is treated in a hieratic manner, supported by a sculpted relief that creates luminous contrasts, reflecting the artist's multi-faceted technique.
