Lot description

Abdallah BENANTEUR (Mostaganem 1931- Ivry-sur-Seine 2017) Day, 1996 Oil on canvas 50 x 50 cm Signed lower right Countersigned, titled and dated on the back Journée (19)96 Provenance : Private collection, Paris. Acquired from Galerie Claude Lemand, and by descent. We would like to thank Mr. Claude Lemand for confirming the authenticity of this work, and for including it in the artist's catalog raisonné, currently in preparation. Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Oran and Algiers, Abdallah Benanteur moved to Paris in 1953. He exhibited his work for the first time in 1956 in Germany, then in 1957 at La Cimaise gallery in Paris. From 1962, he devoted himself to engraving, illustrating poems by Jean Sénac. In 1965, he founded the Charef collection, a remarkable collection of bibliophile books that he designed from start to finish. He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1971 to 1974 (in the "Book" section), before devoting himself exclusively to painting from 1987 onwards. Somewhere between poetic figuration and luminous abstraction, his work has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions and features in over thirty museums, including the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Institut du Monde Arabe and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France."
