Lot description
Chaibia TALLAL (Morocco 1929 - 2004) Clown, circa 1983 Gouache on canson paper 64 x 50 cm Signed lower right Chaïbia "Woman is the light of the house, just as color is the light of the painting". Chaïbia Tallal, quoted in Chaïbia, la magicienne de la couleur, ONA Foundation, Rabat, 2003. A self-taught artist and a major figure in Moroccan modern art, Chaïbia Tallal began developing a radically free pictorial universe in the 1960s, free from all academic constraints. Here, her gouache depicts a monumental woman reminiscent of her popular rural frescoes, while the frontal gaze lends the figure an almost totemic presence. For Chaïbia, women are at once mothers, goddesses and witnesses of everyday life. Chaïbia remains the most singular voice of a popular and poetic modernity, carried by the sincerity of her gesture and the strength of her gaze.
